BioTER Arthropods: Assessment of the conservation status and distribution of critically endangered terrestrial arthropod species in the Canary Islands

Knowledge of the distribution and status of arthropod populations is essential for establishing appropriate conservation measures, and is particularly important for species classified as critically endangered. 

This project aims to reassess the conservation status of six of the seven arthropod species listed as Critically Endangered (CR) in the Canary Islands. In addition, species listed as endangered in the national catalogue and species that are candidates for inclusion in the CR category will be evaluated. 

To this end, the current distribution of the species will be characterised based on historical and current capture data, expert communication, bibliographic data, and distribution and potential habitat models. These data will expand our knowledge of the distribution of these species, their population status, and the threats present in their range, and will enable us to reassess their conservation status using the criteria established by the IUCN.   

Implementation period: 2023-2026.
